018 – Interview with Djoymi Baker – Star Trek and Mythology
In this episode, I interview Dr Djoymi Baker from the University of Melbourne. Dr Baker discusses the impact of Star Trek on science and society, the portrayal of mythological stories, and how the show has become the mythology of our times. Listen in to this very interesting topic.

Great job, I listened to this on my way home last night.
The interview was great because the questions were well thought out and Dr Baker expressed her ideas very clearly and with great humour.
With regards to childrens shows having to be “educational”,
Dr. Who (another sci-fi “childrens” show) was also aimed at
being educational, by dint of the Doctor travelling back in
time to historical events…
I can’t wait to hear another interview from you!

Hi DP,
I’m glad you enjoyed the interview. You’ve also brought up another great example of the sci-fi / childrens shows / history-education-mythology link. I’m sure there are people studying Dr Who (officially or unofficially!) as well.
Thanks for the comment!

Listened to the interview traveling home and enjoyed it. Am a Star Trek fan but would recommend it to anyone. Djoymi is a smart lady and very easy to listen to. I wish her success with her book and home to hear more from her in perhaps a follow up interview.

Hi NH,
Thanks very much for the kind comment. I hope to be able to do further interviews with Dr Baker at a later stage as well.

Another comment along the lines of the previous ones. Dr. Baker was a pleasure to listen to. I’m a librarian and you can be sure that her book is going to be in our collection upon its publication. I hope she comes back for another interview. Perhaps a Q&A from reader (listener)-submitted questions once folks have had a chance to read her book?
